WORLD IN TRANSITION ART OF THE 1920S

9.2.2019 — 19.5.2019

After 1918 many artists strove to differentiate themselves from Expressionism and Pictorialism by adopting a more objective and realistic mode of representation, establishing a new style that was dubbed New Objectivity in painting and New Vision in photography. This exhibition explores the interplay between these two media by juxtaposing paintings and photography from this era. The topic areas examined include the portrait – with a particular focus on self-portraits, individual likenesses, “type” portraiture, and nudes – along with cityscapes, still lifes, industrial and technical images as well as political photomontages that exemplify the social tensions during this turbulent era.

On view are paintings by artists including Otto Dix, Hannah Höch, Ruolf Schlichter and Christian Schad, and photographs by Aenne Biermann, László Moholy-Nagy, Albert Renger-Patzsch, August Sander, and others.
