Diego Marcon: La Gola
The correspondence between Gianni and Rossana sits at the centre of Diego Marcon’s new film La Gola. Portrayed by hyperrealistic mannequins, the characters’ eyes and facial expressions are animated in postproduction. Gianni lauds the heavenly skills of his chef Baptiste, while Rossana vividly describes the physical suffering and course of her mother’s illness. The melodrama is scored by Federico Chiari and recorded on the Pietro Corna organ in the cathedral of Sant’Alessandro Martire in Bergamo. Told in striking closeups, the three levels of the plot—the culinary, the bodily and the score—culminate in a sumptuous dessert, the flailing health of Rosanna’s mother and the climax of the musical crescendo.
La Gola was commissioned by Kunstverein in Hamburg, Kunsthalle Wien, and Biennale de l’Image en Mouvement, Geneva, with support from Sadie Coles HQ, London and Galerie Buchholz, Berlin/Cologne/New York.
