AMERICA!
DISNEY, ROCKWELL, POLLOCK, WARHOL

19.10.2019 — 12.1.2020

The Bucerius Kunst Forum is presenting under the title America! Disney, Rockwell, Pollock, Warhol these four American artists for the first time. They all portrayed the American Way of Life and their works shaped the image of the United States worldwide - in high and popular culture.

Walt Disney, Norman Rockwell, Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol were all pioneers in their respective artistic fields. Together, they created an image of the USA that is indelibly etched in our collective visual memory. Disney breathed life into pictures and coloured the dreams of entire generations of children and adults with animated films such as FantasiaBambi and Sleeping Beauty. Norman Rockwell, still relatively unknown in Germany, chronicled small-town America in the first half of the twentieth century. His realistic and sometimes satirical depictions of the “American way of life” adorned the covers of major US magazines for over 40 years. With his so-called drip paintings, Jackson Pollock was already a legend in his lifetime, and in his radical approach arguably the most influential abstract artist of the twentieth century. Andy Warhol broke down the hotly debated border between art and commerce, high and low art; with his iconic, freely reproducible lithographs of the American consumer world and his portraits of Hollywood stars and starlets he himself became an icon. The exhibition brings together some 170 works by these four seminal figures who each shaped the visual culture of the USA in his own inimitable way.
